Gardening Lessons in Your Own Garden
This service suits those who are new to gardening and have an existing garden that they would like to learn how to maintain themselves. Why pay someone else hundreds or even thousands of dollars a year to maintain your garden when you can do it yourself and improve your health and wellbeing in the process? Gardening is therapeutic and keeps people active. Personalised gardening lessons give the client a unique opportunity to be inspired and gain horticultural knowledge from a highly qualified industry professional, relating specifically to their garden. A gardening lesson will be tailored to the needs of the client, but would normally involve:
- Identifying plants in the garden
- Learning correct pruning techniques, such as when and how to prune particular plants in your garden
- Correct use of tools
- Soil analysis
- Soil improvement, fertilising and mulching
- Identifying pests and diseases and learning control techniques and suitable products to use
- Weed control
- Maintaining a healthy lawn
- Correct planting techniques and plant establishment
- Irrigation
- Pot culture
- Assessing plants in the garden and deciding whether they should be removed and/or replaced
- Design advice
- Appropriate plant selection
- Propagation techniques (if applicable)
- Starting and/or maintaining a productive vegetable garden
- Introduction to Permaculture principals and design (if applicable)
- How to create habitat for wildlife
- Composting and/or worm farming techniques
- No-dig gardening
- Organic pest and disease control
Gardening lessons can be just a one off session or the client may wish to have follow up sessions to go through what needs to be done at certain times of year. A minimum of four sessions throughout a 12 month period are recommended, i.e. at least one session per season in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Gardens change throughout the year and each season brings new challenges in the form of weather extremes, watering requirements, pests, diseases and weeds. There are a variety of jobs to be done depending on the time of year therefore it is of great benefit to gain knowledge and hands on experience in how to deal with these challenges as they arise throughout the year, empowering the client to look after their garden themselves for years to come. A discounted rate will apply for more than one gardening lesson in a 12 month period.
